GirlMogul t-shirt Contest on Claire Mysko Bolg

We talked about Clarie a few weeks ago - she's the author of a new book for tweens and teens - You're Amazing.  It's a non fiction book designed to help girls navigate the storms of their school, social, family and personal life.  It takes on topics such as friends, bullying, family, body image, etc and include stories from those who have been there and done that, as well as exercises to help girls work through their issues on their own or with some help.  Anyway, I think it's a great back to school pick....And Claire is also sponsoring a GirlMogul t-shirt giveaway contest, so please head on over and check it out.

Little House on the Prairie - worth a re-read

Little House on the Prairie.jpg

It came to my attention that members of the newest generation may not be familiar with Little House on the Prairie - the show (which aired in the mid to late seventies) or the books which were written by Laura Ingalls Wilder in the early 20th century about growing up on the frontier in the later 1800s.  I liked both - Little House on TV was something I watched every day (in reruns) and I devoured the books reading each one (there are 8) several times over.  The books tell the story of a family of third generation immigrants who move from Wisconsin to the Dakota frontier in search of more farmable land.  From their trip in a covered wagon to homesteading on the prairie - where they co-exist with the Native Americans, the the family's eventual move to frontier farming town where they try build a solid laugh.  If you've ever wanted to know how head cheese is made, or want to know what's like to be snowed in for an entire winter, or make ice cream out of snow and molasses, Laura Ingalls Wilder is your girl.  She matures in the books from Little Half Pint, to a teacher (at 16!) in a one room school room, to a wife, mother, and farmer.

A far cry from Gossip Girl or 90210 (though Nellie Olesen does function at the rich, gossipy foil to Laura's 'good girl) Little House on the Prairie is full of stories of hard work, family values and of self-reliant women -- before we had too many questions about working mothers, to work or not work, we have these women - whose work both inside and outside the house - is vital to the family's survival.

Anyway - the books are worth a look.  I recently took my entire boxed set from my old bedroom - I intend to start to reread them - I'll give up an update as I go along, to see how my childhood memories hold up.

The GirlMogul Story

The GirlMogul Story

It all started with a strange invitation. A simple, clean crisp invitation to four very different girls, from different backgrounds, with different interests and talents. Asked to meet at the City Library one weekend afternoon, their parents and caregivers dropped them off (after thoroughly checking everything out) into the optimistic and caring arms of Abby. Led through the ancient building to, they went up , up and up, to the top floor (which they had never even known about, not even Rose), to meet the strange mysterious Dr. Smith. With her gray hair pulled back in a bun and crisp navy suit on, she looked over the girls. Rose, Poppy, Lily and Daisy. Under that steely gaze, even Daisy straigntned up from her slouch and wished she was wearing something beside her favorite, torn and tattered t-shirt.

And then Dr. Smith smiled. “Welcome girls. We have big things planned for you…” And so begins the story of the GirlMoguls – Lily, Rose, Poppy and Daisy – and no, those aren’t their real names. Read on to find out more about the Girls

Lily

Lily’s fun vivacious and outgoing. She’s a natural leader and that’s the role she’ll assume in the group. She makes friends everywhere she goes. A decent student, Lily can do really well when she tries hard. When she doesn’t try in school, she does ok. She’s a little better at math than any other subject and sometimes finds reading a whole book tough going, unless it’s about something really interesting. Unlike the other GirlMoguls it may seem Lily doesn’t have any special talents, but her natural ability to rally the team around, listen to all sides and make decisions will make her an excellent leader. Watch as she discovers an unknown interest in money and business.

Lily lives in the suburbs of the city, with her Mom, a real estate agent, and her dad, a banker. They have a dog named Scoochie.

Poppy

Poppy’s the scientist of the group – insatiably curious she’s always asking why. She has a love of animals and when she was little spent hours collecting bugs, worms and other things. She has two fish tanks, one turtle tank and a hamster. She’s always watching the Science channel and reading anything about science. For the holidays last year, she got her first chemistry kit. She set up her own lab in her room, where she’s constantly working on perfecting a new hand lotion for her older sister.

Daisy

Daisy is one tough cookie. Super smart, sarcastic and a little bit of a rebel, Daisy looks tough on the inside but has a heart of gold on the inside. She lives with her father in an apartment in the heart of the City. She loves the great views, but her favorite thing is working on her computer. She disassembled her first computer when she was 3, and since then has been building her own and writing programs for it. She’s even built a few of her own gadgets like a remote door bell and phone ringer – it drives her dad crazy. Daisy never does well in school, but she could if she tried. She doesn’t though – she’d rather be playing a video game, building a computer or programming an widget for My Space.

Rose

Rose is the quiet one of the group. The scholar, the writer and the observer. The voice of the GirlMoguls, she starts chronicling their adventures. Rose lives on a farm on the outskirts of the City. Her mom works the farm while her dad is overseas. It’s a busy life, but overall it’s good. Rose loves to read and can lose herself in a book when she’s not supposed to be doing chores. Also very curious, Rose believes that everything worth knowing is in a book – she most often goes to the library (or her computer) to find the answer to something. Often the voice of reason in the GirlMoguls, Rose is an excellent researcher – with Daisy’s internet skills, Poppy’s curiosity and need to experiment and Lily’s leadership, there’s no problem they can’t solve.

GirlMoguls - Encouragement for High Achieving Girls

Hi, this is the home blog for the GirlMoguls.  Who are the GirlMoguls?  We're four girls who have joined together to learn more about things that interest us.   We have big dreams and we’re lucky enough to get the opportunity to explore thos dreams and find out what it would be like to be a rocket scientist or a CEO (that’s someone who runs a business – big or small).
Of course, we don’t do this all alone.  We have help.  Lots of it!  In fact we didn’t even know each other until recently, even though we all live in Riverton.   You can find out more about how we met here.
Anyway, so we started the GirlMogul club, a place that allows us to explore our dreams and the future possibilities.  Sometimes we go on fieldtrips, and sometimes we do a lot of research in out clubhouse.  Other times, we get to go out into the community and do a fun project.
We each have different talents and interests, and when we combine them we come up with some pretty cool ideas and have some fun adventures.

Note to Parents

The Parent Note
This is a note to all parents.  GirlMogul.com is a company and site founded by Andrea Stein, a mother.  The concept for GirlMogul began when I was buying clothes for my niece and then my own baby girl.  Everything was for a princess.   And it didn’t seem to get any better as they got older.  Do I really want my daughter to grow up to become Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton?  Not at all.
So I started to think.  The phrase GirlMogul popped into my head and it took awhile to take its present shape.  At first I thought that there was a need for financial education for kids, especially girls.  Well there is, and there are a lot of sources for it.  Then I thought about how when I was little I wanted to do it all – magazine editor, publisher, star athlete, astronaut, explorer, secret agent, detective and explored.  I loved reading fact and fiction books about great adventures, mysteries, nature and history.
And slowly the idea of the GirlMoguls came to me.  Instead of t-shirt that said Future Princess on it, how about one that said Future Rocket Scientist.  And so the girls grew into the four characters, Lily, Rose, Daisy and Poppy.   A website was born, so too were some designs and t-shirts.  And soon a book!
GirlMogul.com is meant to be the home of the GirlMoguls, a safe place for girls 6-12 to learn, explore and share their interests, talents and dreams.  We hope you will sit and stay, explore our resource pages.  We hope you will read the adventures of the Girls as they do really neat things and learn that the future is limitless.
We hope you might buy a t-shirt from our partner Café Press to help support the site and combat the Princess Brigade.
