GirlMogul of the Day - Brownie Wise

Tupperware Unsealed.jpg

Brownie Wise was the first women to appear on the cover of BusinessWeek in 1954.  Who was she? The genius behind taking Tupperware from just another good idea to a cultural phenenomon.  Brownie Wise was a divorced, single, working mom who made extra money selling cleaning supplies through home parties - gatherings of friends and friends of friends.  She saw Tupperware (invented by Earl Tupper) and realized that the reason it wasn't selling was because people - women, needed to see it to believe it...So she started selling Tupperware through house parties, eventually getting noticed by the inventor himself.

He invited her to become a Vice President and she focused on marketing and building up the direct sales, home party avenue for sales - and the rest is history.  Tupperware went from obscurity to a cultural icon.  As for Brownie, she managed to become a celebrity in her own right, throwing parties, being hailed by the media, and of course appearing on BusinessWeek.  She was lauded for giving housewives an opportunity to gain some financial freedom while still being able to "stay home."

Eventually her celebrity caused a rift with company founder Earle Tupper and he uncermoniously fired her.  She was given one year's severance and walked away with nothing else.... She never saw to it she got any equity.  Somehow her acumen and notoriety never really translated into a successful act.  I haven't read the book - Unsealed, but reviews and press seem to indicate that it has a lot more information about that part of the story.

So Brownie Wise -pioneering GirlMogul of Her Day - just goes to show that you can do quite a bit without leaving the house.

GirlMogul of the Day - Sen. Hillary Clinton

Mrs. Clinton.jpg

Love her or hate, support her or not, she gets our vote for GirlMogul of the Day because she was able to put "18 million cracks in the glass ceiling."  Sen Clinton is not afraid to be smart, to be impassioned, and even to shed a tear.  She serves as a reminder for what a women can do when she sets her mind to it, a reminder that not all paths to the top are straight, a reminder that though we may want it, we don't always get what we want, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have tried, for it's in the trying, sometimes that the most progress is made.

Michelle Obama's Speech

Michelle Obama at DNC.jpg

I don't usually stay up to watch party conventions - after all the end is a given, the commentary is tries to hard, and sometimes watching people give speeches in fronts of hundred of thousands of people can be downright painful - oops - a gaffe here, a stumble there.  But I decided to turn into Michelle Obama's speech - since, after all, she is growing on me.

She hit the right themes - a higher power, the American Dream, hard work, sacrifice, the ability to pull oneself up by one's bootstraps. All in all, a pretty impressive speech - made all the more so by her poise, confidence, and her show of emotion speaking about the birth of her daughters.   As she said,"He’s the same man who drove me and our new baby daughter home from the hospital 10 years ago this summer, inching along at a snail’s pace, peering anxiously at us in the rearview mirror, feeling the whole weight of her future in his hands.”

And after all - isn't that how all of us, mothers & fathers feel?

Michelle Obama - GirlMogul of the Day

Michelle Obama.jpg

Check out this article on Micheel Obama from the Associated Press.  Which ever way you may be leaning politically, whatever you think a role of a First Lady should be, let's just take a moment and applaud Michelle Obama for being...her.  As the article says" There's not a parent on planet Earth who wouldn't want a daughter like this," said Edythe Friley, 61, a retired teacher from Detroit ..."

She is a role model to all girls out there - having risen from poverty through hard work and education, to achieve a meaningful career, to raise a family and achieve a realistic level of finacial success and stability.  Go Ms. Obama...and no matter what happens, keep on inspiring all those other GirlMoguls out there.

Think the Obama girls would like a Future Leader of the Free World t-shirt?  GirlMogul will be happy to send them ones...pass the word along.

Shaping Youth Blog

Shaping Youth.jpg

First all - sorry for the delay in posting.  There were umm technical issues that took several emails and a couple of tech support calls to figure out.  But we're back and have a slate of great posts coming up, including information on a giveaway a new friend is hosting.

But first I just wanted to bring the Shaping Youth Blog and its founder Amy Jussel to your attention.  This is a great well thought out blog about the media's effect on youth today - and don't worry - it's not all bad.  It includes a lot of insight into how teens spending all this time online is going to be shaping the next generation.  Of course, I am having pains realizing that I am not of the next generation anymore... Anyway great information resources and links on body image, branding, and one of my greatest worries - growing up too soon.

The Princess Bubble - As Seen on TV

Princess Bubble.jpg

Be sure to check out The Princess Bubble - it's a modern day fairy tale starring a well-employed, globe-trotting, good-friend, good-date, helpful-neighbor princess who is confused by the traditional fairy tale message that implies she must find her “prince” before she can live “happily ever after.” Join Princess Bubble on eher adventures as she finds her Happily Ever After - and hint - it doesn't invovle a man named Charming.  Just the kind of book GirlMogul can get behind.   In fact we liked it so much - we decided to buy some ourselves to sell - check out the Princess Bubble Book on GirlMogul and you'll see a great price and a free shipping code (SHH! It's good for your whole order!)

Book Review - You're Amazing

You're Amazing.jpg

Girls Inc Presents: You're Amazing by Claire Mysko is a great book designed to help girls deal with the pressure of being perfect.  Aimed at teenagers, it delves into subjects like school pressure, weight issues, crushes, relationships, friends, family and priorities.  Starting with the difference between a Supergirl - one who feels the need to be perfect, to please everyone else first and put herself last and an Amazing Girl, who isn't afraid to ask questions, ask for help,  is proud of her accomplishments and takes care of herself, the book goes on and presents stories and tips from real life girls - some of them teens who are in the midst of living through it, and some from older women who have survived.  The book includes sound advice, thoughtful tips and stories that are sure to strike a chord with just about ever girl.  Included are some quizzes and journal activities to help your girl get the most of the book.  A perfect book to read right before the start of school, consider starting your own family book club - read along with her and use it as the perfect place to start some discussions about important, if somewhat difficult topics.

The book is available on Amazon & at other booksellers.  Check out the author's, Claire Mysko, website as well.  She has a great blog, including book giveaways, posts about girls issues, a list of favorite authors and other great stuff.   She's also the founder of Inside Beauty, a website and outreach program designed to give girls a healthy fashion and beauty reality check.
