Quote of the Day - Perseverance, Confidence and Belief in ourselves

"Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained."  - Marie Curie
An apparent lesson for our girls and women out there.  We must believe we are gifted for something.  We all have special talents and strengths - we need to encourage our daughters to find them and develop (focus on strengths as opposed to weaknesses).  It doesn't have to be a unique talent or strength - you may be gifted with an eye for color, or arranging things.  You may be gifted in solving mathematical problems.  The fact is you can develop your strengths and talents and take confidence from that into your everyday life.  You may take your strengths and talents and decide to make a living from them.  Either way, spending time doing something you like, enjoy and are good at, builds confidence that exudes into every other area of your life.

Quote of the Day - Self Esteem

"Self Esteem isn't everything; it's just that it's the only thing." Gloria Steinem

The perfect thing to remember.  If you don't love yourself, no one else .  And self esteem will keep you up when everything is going down.  Self-esteem is a daily thing - just because you have it one day, doesn't mean it shows up the next day - it's something you have to work on - at least it is for most of us.  Practice makes perfect and you can practice self-esteem - or at least fake it until you make it.

All this talk leads us to an exciting new product from GirlMogul - we're proud to offer best-selling author Catherine Dee's Girl Power Kits, featuring Catherine's wonderful books containing quotes and inspiration for girls 8-12.   There's even a special kit to encourage self-esteem, featuring the book "The Girl's Guide to Life." Guess who's a fan - no less than Ms. Steinem herself.  Click here to browse - these make great gifts.

How I Wish I had been a Girl Scout

GirlScouts ad.jpg

The above is a new ad for the newer hipper Girl Scouts.  I wrote about their image makeover yesterday and I thought I would spend a few posts exploring the Girl Scouts.

First off - I regret not being a scout - maybe it was all cooking and cookies when I was the right age, but it's not any more.  The Girl Scouts are really promoting leadership and business skills.  They have partnered with Angela and Vanessa Simmons (daughters of Run DMC who is now a reverend) to promote business skills.  Here is their part of the site  so you can check them out for yourself.  Apparently, Run has an MTV reality show, Run's House.  Sounds like the exact opposite of Meet the Osbornes (thank goodness).

Tomorrow - I'll be looking at more of the Girl Scout programs and talking about them.  As always - anyone involved with the Girl Scouts - please post - I would love to know what you think about this new partnership with MTV reality TV stars - is it good or bad - is the show itself something that is inspiring and encouraging to girls?

The Girl Scouts get Hip

An interesting article in the WSJ by Ellen Byron about the Girl Scout's image makeover.  They have hired a new chief marketing officer to help modernize the image of the Girl Scouts.  Apparently great things have been happening within the Girl Scouts in terms of the skills they work on - it's not just cookies and campfires and they want they're "brand" to reflect that.     Interestingly enough, the article says that the Girl Scouts found they were losing membership to non-activities - it wasn't so much that girls were not joining (or re-upping) because they were too busy with other activities like sports, but that they were too busy with non-activities - like chatting, hanging out online and at the mall.  So the Girl Scouts will try to target this group - by making the programming more appealing to that age group, narrowing the age ranges within each troop - so the 8 year olds and the 14 year olds aren't together, etc.

As a girl, I certainly thought the Girl Scouts were too domestic - campfires, cooking and sewing - blech, so I never joined.  I regret a bit now, though I don't think not joining caused any irreparable damage.  But based on the things I have seen, I would definitely sign my daughter up when she's old enough.

I would be interested to know what other Girl Scouters (former, current, troop leaders) think of the new Girl Scouts and this move to "Shake things up." Post a comment below.

Quote of the Day - Attitude

"Attitude will take you furhter than talent." Various

How true this. And how important to teach our daughters.  We teach our girls that practice makes perfect, study hard, and make sure to cross all the t's and i's.  Women are very talented at many things - it makes us great support people.  But do we ever give any thought to how we do our work - with a smile, or a grim determination.  Do we let dark thoughts intrude upon our work and plans and derail us?  Sure we do - and that's why we should think almost as much about how we're doing something as we do to how well we're doing it.

A smile goes a long way -like for a boss who notices that the "difficult" project was completed - not without a fuss - but with a can do attitude.  Just remember, DON'T forget to toot your own horn.  A positive attitude means no complaining, not no self-promotion.

So good luck - and have a wonderful day.

Quote of the Day - Dreams

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." – Eleanor Roosevelt

This is one of my favorites - both the lady and the quote. So believe in your own dreams - no matter how small or how large.  You have to keep believing and keep moving forward. Take small steps - whether it's writing it down, talking to someone, sending an email, practicing, reading a book, or doing a litte bit of internet research.  Imagine your dreams in vivid color (no room for black and white here).

Good Luck!

Quote of the Day - Happiness

"Happiness is not the destination, it's the journey." - Various

Many people have said this, but it does bear repeating, in the midst of everything.  We don't ever really know what the destination is in life - we may think we know, but we don't - it changes on us, we change it. So it's really about the taking time along the way, every day to be happy.  A friend of mine mentioned that everyday she takes the time to write down what's she thankful for and instantly she feels better.  I was compelled to try it myself, after a particularly bad day.  Some of the things that made my list:

I was happy my son's fall down the stairs resulted in nothing more than a few tears

I was happy my children were healthy.

I was happy to be able to have a quiet late night dinner with my husband

I was happy to live in my house

I was happy for the opportunities that await me out there

The list went on, but even now as I write those things, I feel better about my day already - just remembering some of the things I should be grateful for.

So - have a happy day...

Future Engineers

I came across this interesting article in the WSJ: Reading, Writing and Engineering about an engineering program that is being taught at the elementary school level.    The "...effort is being spurred, in part, by concerns that in math and science, American students are falling behind other countries -- particularly such industrial competitors as Japan and South Korea."

The program focuses on getting kids to practice real world theory - making play-doh in a "scientific fashion" as opposed to teaching theory.  The article focuses on the corporate sponsorship (or self-interest) aspect of it and says that proponents are awaiting a release of a study this year to assess the impact of teaching engineering using these different methods.

I wonder if the making play-doh really does equate to a higher interest in chemical engineering, or does it just wind up as "The time we got to make play-doh in class."

Any teachers or parents out there who have experience in a hands on science teaching program and the impact,if any, it had on the kids?

We're back

Yes - we took a little break - but that's because so much has been happening.  As you can see we got a little style makeover for our friends at FirmDot.  Within minutes, they uploaded the logo and the links on the left hand side so you can always find your way back to the GirlMogul site.  We're so excited about this and other changes.

A new site is coming soon - yup we're redesigning the GirlMogul main site to make it prettier and easier to use.

I recently joined Ladies who Launch,  a business incubator program and it has been phenomenal in terms of moving GirlMogul forward

New designs - we're revamping our Future Series - so stay tuned

New Quote designs - I can't say much at this time, but watch out.

And many more things to come which I will be posting about.  As always if you have something to tell us about GirlMogul, or ways to encourage successful girls, don't hesitate to contact us.
